POP Quilters

The POP Quilters have been busy quilting for over 2 years now, and we meet on 2nd and 4th Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9pm. Last year we made quilts for Lutheran World Relief and the Compass Center and this year we are making quilts for McDermott Place in Lake City.

We welcome new members from our church and from the community who want to make quilts for people in need. If you haven’t quilted before, but enjoy sewing and would like to join us, we can get you started quilting. It isn’t hard and it’s satisfying and worthwhile and it is fun. We each enjoy the challenge of finding just the “right” fabric and colors to create a quilt top with forty-eight 10 1/2" squares. Then as we improve our skills we can go on to create interesting patterns and themes.

When we get together on Tuesday evenings we select fabric, iron and cut squares, or tie a quilt and help pin the binding for the final machine stitching. We work together making the quilts and sharing ideas. We drink a cup of tea and show and tell. Most quilters sew the colorful squares together at home and bring the finished top in to tie it to the batting and sheet with the help of other quilters.

We accept donated top sheets, full-size or larger and in good condition, and new or slightly used washable, woven (not knitted or stretchy) cotton or cotton poly blend fabric in all colors and prints. It takes about 6 yards of fabric for a quilt top and a full size sheet for the bottom. Quilt batting has been donated to us by a Thrivent group.

If this sounds like a great service project for you we hope you will join us. Please call Diana Johnson at 206-368-8274 for more information.
